image of Ellie Clare pondering a sign saying "Small Business Growth Grants" she was soooo close to being eligible, however wants to help the businesses that are.

At the beginning of August the new Small Business Growth Grants funing program was announced to help WA small businesses grow. While it’s been a controversial topic online, we wanted to bring you the information to see if your business is eligible.

Please note: This Grant is for SMALL business not MICRO businesses (We ourselves are not eligible for this grant however, we can help the businesses that are!) Read below for criteria.

If you have been looking for a way to invest in your business without carrying the full financial load, the Small Business Growth Grant could be exactly what you need.

Not only can eligible businesses access matched funding of up to $10,000, but the grant can be used for marketing, meaning you can finally launch that campaign, refresh your brand, or upgrade your website with financial support.

In this article, we’ll cover who’s eligible, how it works, and why now is the perfect time to apply.

What Are the Small Business Growth Grants?

The Small Business Growth Grants program is run by the Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC) on behalf of the Cook Government. It’s designed to help WA businesses take the next step by providing matched funding vouchers of up to $10,000 for professional services that support business growth.

These services include:

  • Digital marketing and communication planning

  • Strategic business planning

  • Workforce development and people management

  • Market research and financial planning

  • Governance, supply chain and ICT management

If marketing is your growth focus, this grant can cover a range of activities from social media strategy and content creation to SEO, branding, and website development.

Key Dates You Need to Know

  • Applications Opened: 10:00 am, Monday 4 August 2025

  • Applications Close: 5:00 pm, Friday 3 October 2025

Funding is competitive and limited to a total of $1 million, so applying early is strongly recommended.

Who Is Eligible?

According to the program guidelines, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Held an ABN and been GST-registered since at least 1 January 2024

  • WA-based and trading continuously before 1 January 2024

  • Annual turnover: over $100,000 (regional) or over $200,000 (Metropolitan)

  • Employ at least 1 and no more than 20 full-time equivalent staff

  • Payroll under $4 million Australia-wide

  • Operate as a for-profit business (not-for-profits and charities are not eligible)

Image of man demonstrating how the funding works. If total project costs $12,000 then the business pays $6,000 and the grant will cover $6,000.

How the Small Business Growth Grants Funding Works

This is a matched funding voucher, not a cash payout.

That means the government covers 50% of the project cost (up to $10,000) and your business pays the other 50%.
Payment goes directly to the service provider after the work is approved.

Example:

  • Your marketing project costs $12,000

  • The grant covers $6,000

  • You contribute the remaining $6,000

Why You Should Use It for Marketing

Marketing isn’t just an expense it’s an investment in visibility, trust, and long-term revenue growth.
Using the grant for marketing could mean:

  • A lead-generating website that works 24/7

  • A brand that’s instantly recognisable in your market

  • Social media campaigns that actually convert followers into clients

  • Improved search rankings through SEO and content marketing
